Mount Remarkable

Mount Remarkable is a summit in the Southern Flinders Ranges that rises approximately 961 meters with distinctive quartzite ridges and mixed forest landscapes. The terrain features changing vegetation zones ranging from eucalyptus woodlands to open scrublands as you ascend.

The mountain was named in 1840 by explorer Edward John Eyre, who noted its striking height compared to surrounding peaks. The name reflects the impression this elevation made on early European travelers in the region.

The mountain holds deep connections to Aboriginal peoples who maintained this land through generations, preserving natural resources and traditional practices.

A hiking trail from the nearby town of Melrose leads up the mountain, and the full round trip takes several hours to complete. Start early and bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the route is exposed to the elements.

An aircraft crash occurred in 1980 when a small plane struck the mountain slope during severe weather, becoming a notable part of local history. This event remains remembered by the community as a significant incident in the region.
