The Glover Cottages are two connected stone structures sitting elevated on an artificial rock shelf along the east side of Kent Street, displaying Colonial Georgian architectural style from the early 1800s. The buildings feature traditional stonework and design elements typical of their period.
Thomas Glover, a former convict, acquired these cottages built in the 1820s through 1830s during Sydney's early growth period. His journey from punishment to property ownership reflects the colonial era's transformation of the settlement.
The cottages show how former convicts became prosperous business owners and contributed to colonial Sydney. You can see them as symbols of personal transformation and entrepreneurial success in early settlement times.
The cottages sit prominently on Kent Street in Millers Point and can be clearly seen from the street level. Since the buildings are now privately held, visitors can best appreciate their appearance and position from the public roadside.
Local residents nicknamed these structures 'The Ark' because of their elevation above surrounding buildings after Kent Street was lowered in the mid-1800s. The name stuck as a way to describe their distinctive raised position.
