20 Lower Fort Street, Millers Point, historic site in New South Wales, Australia

Welcome to Lower Fort Street, Millers Point, a historic area of Sydney that is home to many heritage-listed buildings. Today, we will be exploring one such building, located at 20 Lower Fort Street. This property was originally built between 1841 and 1843 as a gentleman's residence, and was one of a pair of London-style townhouses. It is a substantial six-bedroom townhouse, based on the Georgian style, with four storeys, a separate kitchen and servants quarters, and an attic. The portico features ionic columns that are shared with the neighbouring property, and there is an iron lace cantilevered balcony on the second storey, which opens onto three French doors. For over 100 years, this property was used by the NSW State Government as a boarding house, but it has since been restored and conserved to its former condition as a gentleman's residence. In 1983, it was tenanted by the NSW Department of Housing, before being added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. The external condition of the property is good, with a painted rendered stone construction and a slate roof. The iron lace on the timber structured balcony adds to the property's charm. The portico and ashlar facade were added in approximately 1863, further enhancing the building's aesthetic appeal. Millers Point is one of the earliest areas of European settlement in Australia, and has long been a focus for maritime activities. This property is a significant streetscape element, representing a piece of Sydney's history and architectural heritage. If you're interested in exploring more of Millers Point, there are many other heritage-listed buildings in the area, including the nearby Dawes Point Battery, which dates back to the early 1800s. You can also take a stroll along the waterfront and enjoy views of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Thank you for joining me on this tour of 20 Lower Fort Street. I hope you've enjoyed learning about this historic property and the surrounding area.
