22 Lower Fort Street, Millers Point, historic site in New South Wales, Australia

Welcome to 22 Lower Fort Street, Millers Point! This heritage-listed former residence and now boarding house is located in the inner city Sydney suburb of Millers Point in the City of Sydney local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The property was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. Millers Point is one of the earliest areas of European settlement in Australia, and a focus for maritime activities. Constructed during the mid-1850s as one of a pair of London style townhouses, this property represents a significant streetscape element. It was first tenanted by the NSW Department of Housing in 1983. This substantial Regency style, five-bedroom Victorian townhouse is based on the London model. It has three storeys with a basement and attic. The portico with ionic columns is shared with its neighbour. An iron lace cantilevered balcony on the second storey opens onto which three French doors. The construction is painted rendered masonry with a corrugated galvanised iron roof. The iron lace on the timber structured balcony adds to the Victorian Regency style. The external condition of the property is good. Window hoods have been added to the top floor and some joinery modifications have been made. As at 26 September 2003, this property is one of two Regency style townhouses based on the London model of three storeys, and is in almost intact exterior condition. It is part of the Millers Point Conservation Area, an intact residential and maritime precinct. Visitors can take a stroll around the neighbourhood and admire the historic architecture and maritime heritage. The area is also home to several pubs and restaurants where visitors can enjoy a meal or a drink while taking in the stunning views of Sydney Harbour. Overall, 22 Lower Fort Street, Millers Point is a must-visit destination for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts. Its rich history and stunning architecture make it a unique and fascinating place to explore.
