Art Gallery of New South Wales, State art institution in The Domain, Sydney, Australia
The Art Gallery of New South Wales is a state art museum in The Domain in central Sydney. Two buildings are linked by a public art garden, displaying works from Australian, European and Asian artists.
The institution was founded in 1872 as the New South Wales Academy of Art and later moved to its current location in The Domain. The neoclassical main building was completed in 1901 and has served as the core of the institution ever since.
The Yiribana Gallery presents a substantial collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, representing diverse Indigenous communities across Australia. Visitors can see works that connect traditional and contemporary forms of expression, offering insight into the artistic practices of these cultures.
Admission is free for the general collection, and the museum opens Thursday through Tuesday from 10:00 to 17:00. On Wednesdays there are extended hours until 22:00, allowing a late visit after work.
The 2022 expansion introduced two new spaces named in an Indigenous language: Naala Badu means seeing waters and Naala Nura translates as seeing country. These names reflect the connection of the building to the natural elements of the surroundings and honor the traditional owners of the land.
