Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art museum in The Domain, Sydney, Australia.
The Art Gallery of New South Wales is an art museum in The Domain and spans two connected buildings with a public garden between them. The spaces display Australian, European, and Asian artworks across approximately 16,000 square meters.
The museum began in 1872 as the New South Wales Academy of Art and held its first public exhibition in 1874 at Clark's Assembly Hall. These early beginnings laid the foundation for the important art institution it is today.
The gallery holds an important collection of works by Indigenous artists and regularly features exhibitions showing both traditional and contemporary creations. This focus allows visitors to experience firsthand the artistic perspectives of the country's original people.
The museum is about 15 minutes from Sydney's center and offers free admission to its permanent collection along with wheelchair access. Several dining venues inside the buildings provide places to rest and eat during your visit.
In 2024, the two buildings received Aboriginal names: Naala Badu for the north building and Naala Nura for the south building. This renaming reflects the museum's growing commitment to recognizing and honoring the cultures of the country's original people.
