Artspace Sydney, Contemporary art gallery in Woolloomooloo, Australia.
Artspace Sydney is a contemporary art center housed in the historic Gunnery Building in Woolloomooloo, presenting between twelve and fifteen exhibitions throughout the year. The spaces are designed with open layouts and tall ceilings that accommodate diverse artistic practices and rotating shows of different scales.
Founded in 1983, the center took over the Gunnery Building, a former military structure in inner Sydney, and transformed it into a dedicated art venue. The conversion established it as a significant platform for contemporary artistic practice in the region.
This space supports emerging and established artists through residency programs that bring Australian creators together with international talent. You can walk through studio areas and observe how artists work on their projects throughout the year.
The center is open daily and situated near Sydney Harbor, making it easy to fit into your day. Entry to regular exhibitions is free, so you can explore what is on show without needing to plan far ahead.
The building itself is a former military complex with generous courtyards and raw brick walls that give the space a distinctive industrial feel. This original structure creates an unusual backdrop for showing contemporary work.
