The Gunnery is a three-story structure on Cowper Wharf Roadway featuring renovated galleries and studio spaces near Sydney Harbour. The building contains exhibition areas and work studios arranged across multiple levels.
Built in 1900 as a storage facility for the Sydney Morning Herald, the building was repurposed as a naval training center during World War II. This transformation reflects changing uses of the harbour area over the decades.
The building houses Artspace, providing rent-free studios for artists and serving as a center for contemporary art exhibitions and cultural programs.
The entrance on Forbes Street connects directly to the Art Gallery of New South Wales and The Domain parklands through accessible pathways. Allow time to explore the multiple levels and gallery spaces at your own pace.
Between 1945 and 1948, naval trainees practiced shooting at projected planes using a specialized dome installed on the ceiling. This training apparatus was later removed but remains a curious chapter in the building's story.
