The Wharf Theatre, Theatre venue in Walsh Bay, Sydney, Australia
The Wharf Theatre is a theatre venue in Walsh Bay, Sydney, housed in a converted wharf building spread across Pier 4 and Pier 5. It contains two separate performance spaces of different sizes that together seat around 539 people.
The building started life as a working wharf known as Pitman's Wharf, dating back to 1829. After decades of port activity, it was converted into a theatre and opened for performances in 1984.
The Wharf Theatre is the home of the Sydney Theatre Company, one of Australia's leading theatre groups. Many Australian actors who later gained international recognition performed on its stages early in their careers.
The theatre sits on Hickson Road in the Walsh Bay area and is easy to reach on foot from central Sydney, as the waterfront walkway connects the district to the city. Arriving early is a good idea, as the entrance walkways along the pier can get narrow and crowded before performances.
The wooden walkway leading to the entrance is lined with framed posters from past productions, letting visitors walk through decades of the venue's history before even entering. This collection shows how the programming and visual identity of the theatre have shifted since it first opened.
