The building originated as a working wharf known as Pitman's Wharf dating to 1829. It transformed into a theatre facility that opened in 1984 as a new venue for performances in Sydney.
The venue has served as a home for the Sydney Theatre Company, showcasing work by Australian artists and international guests to audiences who came specifically for theatre. The location became known as a gathering place for people interested in live performance.
