Rydalmere Hospital Precinct, Heritage hospital complex in Rydalmere, Australia
Rydalmere Hospital Precinct is a complex of buildings with Georgian and Victorian architectural features situated on extensive grounds near Parramatta River. The structures display different construction periods and served various institutional purposes.
Governor Lachlan Macquarie ordered construction of a girls' orphan school in 1813, a purpose the site fulfilled for many decades. In 1888 it was converted to a psychiatric hospital and served that function until modern times.
The site shows how institutional care evolved in Australia, starting as an orphanage and later serving as a mental health facility. Visitors can observe how the buildings and their layout reflect these different purposes.
The former hospital buildings are now part of Western Sydney University's campus and keep their original structural features. Visitors should check ahead as access may be limited depending on ongoing university activities.
The precinct contains one of the oldest surviving public institutional buildings in Australia with foundations from the Macquarie era. The building still displays Victorian and Georgian details added later while the original structure was preserved.
