Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve

Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve is a coastal reserve near Coffs Harbour with a sealed walking track that climbs to an eastern lookout point. From there, visitors see panoramic views across the Solitary Islands Marine Park and the surrounding ocean.

The reserve has served for decades as a nesting site for migratory wedge-tailed shearwater birds that return seasonally from August to April. This annual cycle has shaped the place's role as a protected natural area.

The island is known as Giidany Miirlarl to the Gumbaynggirr people and holds deep meaning in their Dreaming stories and spiritual traditions. This connection shapes how the land is cared for and respected today.

Access starts at Coffs Harbour Marina and crosses a break wall path to reach the island, with rest points scattered along the steep climb. Coastal weather can change quickly, so wear proper footwear and prepare for a moderately strenuous walk.

An outdoor learning center documents how thousands of wedge-tailed shearwaters nest in burrows that dot the island's slopes. Visitors can discover how these birds use underground tunnels to shelter and raise their young.
