Lismore, Regional administrative center in Northern Rivers, New South Wales, Australia
Lismore is a town in northern New South Wales, roughly 480 miles (770 kilometers) from Sydney. The region extends from the town center to surrounding villages and natural areas.
The settlement grew from a logging camp in the 19th century and became a municipality in 1879. It gained city status in September 1946 and developed into an important center of the Northern Rivers.
The name comes from a Scottish island and recalls early settlers from the United Kingdom. The community maintains this connection through places and institutions with Scottish references today.
The town sits centrally in the Northern Rivers region and offers access to many smaller places and natural landscapes. Visitors find services and facilities here for the entire surrounding area.
A new cycle path is being built on a former railway line between the town and the village of Bentley to the west. The first section is expected to open for visitors and locals by late 2024.
