Comino's Arcade

Comino's Arcade is a three-story brick building featuring modernist architectural elements such as a striking brick facade, cantilevered window shades, and functional casement windows. The levels contain multiple retail spaces with direct access to the main shopping district.

Greek businessman Arthur Comino built this retail establishment between 1942 and 1944 during World War II to serve military personnel stationed in the area. The project emerged during a period when this district was a significant hub for military activity.

The structure reflects the influence of Greek immigrants from Kythera on Queensland's commercial development, particularly in retail and hospitality sectors.

The building sits on Redcliffe Parade and is easy to reach via the main shopping street. The interior spreads across multiple levels, so plan to explore different floors to discover all the shops.

In December 1946, the city's first nightclub, known as 'The Ace of Clubs,' opened in a ballroom on the top floor. This nightlife venue was a novel and exciting development for the neighborhood at the time.
