Moreton Bay Pile Light, Maritime lighthouse at Brisbane River entrance, Australia
Moreton Bay Pile Light was a lighthouse with a hexagonal shape supported by seven iron piles that rose above the water at the river mouth. The structure was specifically designed to stand in this location and guide vessels through the navigation channels.
The lighthouse was built in 1884 to replace the older lightship Rose that had previously served this location. It was destroyed in 1949 after being struck by a tanker and no longer stands today.
The structure served as a visible marker of Queensland's maritime growth and showed sailors that Brisbane was becoming an important trading hub. People passing through the waters recognized this place as a sign of the region's expanding commerce.
Visitors can locate the site of the former lighthouse using modern navigation charts and maps that still mark this location. The best way to see this place is by taking a boat tour through the bay or river.
The structure had a special system that displayed tidal information to ships during both day and night hours. This tidal indication feature was a technical solution that was not commonly used at that time.
