RAN Station 9, Pinkenba, Military defense site in Pinkenba, Australia
RAN Station 9 is a World War II defense installation in Pinkenba featuring concrete structures and barracks remnants positioned along the Brisbane River. The buildings showcase coastal defense architecture from that era.
The facility began operations in January 1944 equipped with advanced submarine detection systems. It formed part of a broader network protecting access to Brisbane.
The site reflects Queensland's wartime defenses through its remaining structures and equipment that visitors can observe along the river.
The site is located in Pinkenba and easily accessible via Sandmere Road. You can walk around the preserved structures and take in the riverside location during your visit.
This station was one of only three facilities in Australia equipped with photo-electric beam technology for harbor defense. The system allowed remote monitoring of movement within the harbor.
