Pinkenba Wharf, Industrial wharf in Pinkenba, Australia
Pinkenba Wharf is an industrial dock that extends into the Brisbane River on the north side near the Gateway Bridge within the Port of Brisbane. It was developed to accommodate large ocean vessels that cannot access other terminals due to bridge height restrictions.
The wharf was built in 1898 following the railway extension from Ascot and served as an embarkation point for soldiers during World War I. A railway spur constructed in 1902 connected it directly to the rail network for efficient cargo transfer.
The name comes from the Turrbal Aboriginal word binkinba, which refers to a place where land tortoises used to gather.
The wharf is accessible only by water and rail as it sits deep within the port grounds. Visitors should know this is an active operating facility where public access may be restricted.
The direct connection between ship and rail at this single location creates a rare integrated port-railway interface. Few modern ports feature such a streamlined cargo transfer system in one place.
