Glengariff, Hendra

Glengariff is a two-story residence in Hendra built in the 1880s with wide verandahs and ornamental gables in Victorian style. The house displays period timber construction with preserved details that maintain its original character.

Edward Jones, a bank manager, commissioned architect Hubert George Octavius Thomas to build the house between 1888 and 1889 during Queensland's economic expansion. A major redesign followed in 1907 when architect Robin Dods made significant alterations to the structure.

The name Glengariff derives from an Irish location, reflecting the Irish heritage of its early owners. The rooms reveal how affluent families of the late 1800s lived and used their homes as spaces for social gatherings.

The property sits near Eagle Farm Racecourse and is visible from the street, with gardens from the Beirne family period still accessible. Visitors should note that the site is heritage-listed and exterior views offer the best way to appreciate the architecture.

The original grounds once covered about 5 acres but were dramatically reduced by urban development over time. Despite this shrinkage, the property preserves garden features that recall the Beirne family's period of prosperity.
