Lyndhurst, Clayfield

Lyndhurst is a heritage villa on London Road in Clayfield with a steeply pitched roof in terracotta Marseilles tiles and large verandah posts. The building retains pressed metal ceilings, narrow pine board linings, and multiple fireplaces that show how the original interior layout looked.

The house was designed in 1896 by architect Robin Dods for John Reid, principal of J C Hutton & Co, as Dods' first major residential project. It represents one of the few surviving examples of his late-nineteen-century work in Queensland.

The house blends British design principles with local Queensland living traditions, showing how European architecture was adapted to the subtropical climate. The deep verandah and high rooms reflect how residents of that time coped with heat and humidity.

The property is located on London Road and easily visible from the street, though interior access may be limited to specific visits or tours. It is worth checking access conditions in advance, as this heritage site may have special visiting arrangements.
