Cremorne, Hamilton

Cremorne is a substantial villa at 34 Mullens Street with extended verandahs and decorative pavilions positioned on a sloped site. The house contains separate entertaining areas, dining and drawing rooms, and private quarters connected by a central corridor that runs through the home.

The building was constructed between 1905 and 1906 as a private residence for a prominent publican and reflects the prosperity of the early 20th century. The family retained ownership for roughly nine decades before selling in the late 1990s.

The house shows how wealthy Brisbane families lived in the early 1900s, with separate zones for family life and entertaining guests. The open verandahs and high ceilings reflect how people designed homes to stay cool in Queensland's hot climate.

The property sits on a hillside with multiple levels accessed by pathways and a concrete staircase descending the slope. Wear comfortable shoes as the terrain is uneven and stairs are needed to move between different parts of the grounds.

The driveway is lined with mature Queen Palms creating a private, park-like entrance to the property that feels removed from the surrounding streets. These towering trees form an avenue that frames the approach and is a notable survivor from the original landscaping.
