Mactaggarts Woolstore

Mactaggarts Woolstore is a three-story brick structure at 53 Vernon Terrace in Teneriffe with regular window patterns across its facade and positioned directly along the Brisbane River. The rectangular building stretches along the waterfront and maintains its original industrial appearance in this heritage quarter.

The warehouse was built in 1926 by Stuart Brothers for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company during Queensland's wool industry expansion. It was one of about sixteen similar riverfront storage facilities constructed during this period of industrial growth.

The building reflects interwar industrial design with its spacious open areas and original fixtures that remain visible today. These wide interior spaces tell the story of how wool was stored and handled during that era.

The location sits directly on the water in Teneriffe, an inner-city neighborhood with good accessibility. The building stands among other heritage structures where visitors can appreciate the architecture from outside.

This is the last remaining wool warehouse positioned directly on the Brisbane River, while none of the original sixteen similar buildings on the riverfront remain. Its survival makes it a rare remnant of this vanished industrial waterfront landscape.
