Newstead Gasworks, Industrial heritage site in Brisbane City, Australia.
Newstead Gasworks is a former industrial facility in Brisbane centered around a large cylindrical iron-frame structure that once held gas. The site has been redeveloped into a mixed-use space with shops, restaurants, and residences while preserving the original metal framework.
The facility was originally established in 1873 and relocated to its current Newstead location in 1887 to serve the growing city. It supplied Brisbane with gas until operations ended in 1971.
The preserved gasholder frame now serves as the central feature of a modern retail and living space. It reflects how Brisbane has transformed its industrial past into a contemporary urban destination.
The site offers shopping and dining options all in one location, making it easy to explore at a relaxed pace. The entire area is walkable and well-suited for casual visits or longer browsing.
This is Queensland's only surviving frame-guided gasholder with its original puddled iron construction from the 1870s. The structure gained heritage protection in 2005, impressing visitors with its Victorian-era engineering.
