Wickham Hotel, Heritage-listed hotel in Fortitude Valley, Australia
The Wickham Hotel is a three-story building featuring a rendered brick facade and timber-framed verandahs located on Wickham Street in Fortitude Valley. The building houses bars, dining areas, and event spaces arranged across multiple levels.
The building was designed by architect Richard Gailey in 1885 and originally operated under the name Oriental. Denis O'Connor acquired it in 1895 and owned it until 1937.
Since 1996, the venue has served as a gathering place for the LGBTQIA+ community and hosts Brisbane's largest festival celebrating this community each year. The space feels welcoming through its decoration and programming that reflects the lives and stories of its visitors.
The building is open daily and accessible without requiring an entry fee to explore its common areas. Visitors should note that different sections may have varying availability depending on the time of day or scheduled events.
The interior retains original embellished plaster ceilings and wooden details while incorporating modern improvements made in recent renovations. This blend of historic craftsmanship with contemporary updates creates spaces that reflect both the past and present.
