Drill Shed, Fortitude Valley

The Drill Shed at 342 Water Street is a timber building with a gable roof, flanked by a caretaker's cottage and an orderly room set against modern high-rises. The three connected structures form a cohesive heritage complex from the pre-Federation era.

The building was constructed in 1884 for infantry units of the Queensland Volunteer Force and moved to its current location in 1925. This relocation was part of military infrastructure changes of the era.

The site served as a gathering place where military personnel and their families came together for training, recruitment, and social events. This role made it a notable community hub during its active years.

The complex underwent extensive renovation work, including structural reinforcement to integrate with surrounding urban development. Visitors should know that this work reflects ongoing efforts to preserve the site while maintaining its place in the modern cityscape.

The complex is the oldest surviving drill shed in Queensland and remains the last pre-Federation military training site in Brisbane. Its survival demonstrates how rarely such structures endure in a modern city.
