Bedford Playground, Heritage playground in Spring Hill, Australia.
Bedford Playground is a heritage recreation area in Spring Hill featuring tennis courts, a children's play area, and a steam locomotive set among mature trees. The site spreads across 8 Love Street with distinct zones for different activities and age groups.
The site was established in 1927 as the third playground project created by the Playground Association of Queensland, designed by architect Frank Gibson Costello. It emerged during a period when Brisbane was developing new public spaces for recreation.
The playground was named in 1959 after Mary Josephine Bedford, a woman who dedicated herself to improving family welfare in Brisbane. Her name remains connected to this place because of her impact on the community.
The playground has separate areas for different age groups with modern equipment and shaded spots for rest. Visitors can find everything they need for a few hours of outdoor time, with plenty of shade beneath the mature trees.
A large porphyry rock outcrop from a 1860s quarry still sits within the grounds. This stone formation shows traces of the quarrying work that once supplied materials for Brisbane's early development.
