Victoria Park, Brisbane, Heritage park in Spring Hill and Herston, Australia.
Victoria Park is a large public park listed on the Queensland Heritage Register, located across the Spring Hill and Herston neighborhoods of Brisbane. The terrain rolls gently across the site, with walking trails, tennis courts, open grassy areas, and picnic spots spread through it.
During World War II the site became a military base housing American soldiers stationed in Brisbane. After the war ended, the grounds were used as temporary housing for Australian women who had married American servicemen and were waiting to leave for the United States.
The Turrbal people called this land Barrambin, a name that pointed to its role as a gathering place long before European settlement. That tradition of people coming together continues today, with locals using the park for weekend sports, community events, and everyday walks.
The rolling hills across the park mean some paths require a bit of effort, so comfortable shoes and water are helpful to bring. Several entry points from surrounding streets make it easy to access different sections depending on what you want to do.
In 1913, scientists from the Carnegie Institution chose this exact spot to measure Earth's magnetic field as part of a global research network. The location was selected for its geographic position, making it one of a handful of sites around the world gathering data at the same time.
