Description
The Prince Consort Hotel comprises two three-story masonry buildings linked by timber verandahs with decorative cast-iron railings along Wickham Street. Inside, multiple function spaces including the Back Room, Pool Room, Bowie Rooms, and Garden Bar accommodate different types of gatherings.
History
The hotel was built between 1887 and 1888 for publican John Daniel Heal as a replacement for an earlier establishment from 1863. This construction marked an important moment in the development of Fortitude Valley.
Culture
The first-floor Club Room functioned as a meeting place where neighborhood groups and associations gathered regularly. The space reflected how the hotel served the local community beyond serving drinks.
