The Fortitude Valley Post Office occupies a corner location at Ann and Ballow Streets, featuring a two-story brick structure with decorated rendered mouldings and cast iron balconies.
Built in 1887 by William Ferguson for the Queensland Post and Telegraph Department, this Victorian Italianate building served as both a post office and residence for postmasters.
The building stands as one of only ten substantial Queensland post offices designed in Victorian Italianate style between 1879 and 1898, displaying period architectural elements.
The ground floor originally contained postal and telegraph services, while the upper level provided living quarters, with subsequent modifications adding modern facilities.
By 1929, this post office processed over 1200 pension payments weekly, making it one of the largest social security distribution centers in Australia at that time.
