St Andrews War Memorial Hospital Administration Building, Heritage hospital administration building in Spring Hill, Queensland.
The St Andrews War Memorial Hospital Administration Building is a two-story administration structure in Spring Hill with a symmetrical facade and distinctive features including pyramidal roofs and flanking sections. The building preserves its original decorative elements while serving as part of a contemporary medical facility.
The building began in the 1860s as a private residence for Sir Charles Lilley, a prominent early Brisbane resident. It later became Emmanuel College before eventually serving its current purpose as a war memorial hospital in the mid-20th century.
The Presbyterian Church founded this medical facility as a memorial to Australian service members from both World Wars. Visitors can see today how the building's purpose and design reflect this connection to military and religious history.
The building is located at 465 Wickham Terrace and is easily accessible from the surrounding Spring Hill streets. Keep in mind that it remains an active medical facility, so public access may be limited to exterior viewing only.
It stands as the last remaining example of early residential colleges from when the University of Queensland operated in central Brisbane. This connection to one of Australia's oldest educational institutions makes it a rare survivor from that era.
