The Royal Brisbane Hospital Nurses' Homes comprise three residential buildings erected between 1896 and 1939, featuring long corridors and broad verandahs. These structures combine Spanish Mission and Arts and Crafts styling with practical floor plans designed to house nursing staff.
The Lady Lamington Nurses' Home was designed by architect Robin Dods in 1896 and set new standards for medical staff housing in Queensland. Additional buildings were added over subsequent decades to expand the complex as the hospital's needs grew.
The buildings show how residential spaces were designed for healthcare workers, blending practical layouts with architectural details that shaped institutional housing.
The buildings are best explored on foot, allowing visitors to view the exterior architecture and outdoor spaces. The L-shaped layout with integrated courtyards creates natural walking routes that connect the different sections.
The complex was designed with a series of connected courtyards and gardens that provided residents with private outdoor spaces within the hospital grounds. These green areas were an unusual feature for worker housing in that era.
