Goldsborough Mort Woolstore

Goldsborough Mort Woolstore, Heritage-listed warehouse in Teneriffe, Australia.

Description

Goldsborough Mort Woolstore is a four-story warehouse made of red brick and timber on Macquarie Street in Teneriffe. The symmetrical front has red brick piers with triple window openings, and a sawtooth roof on top provided natural light that workers needed for sorting wool.

History

Stuart Brothers from Sydney built this warehouse in 1933 for Goldsbrough Mort & Co, which had bought the land in 1922 when wool prices were favorable. It became the last remaining woolstore of this company in Queensland, marking an important part of the state's industrial past.

Culture

The wool trade shaped Queensland's early economy, and this building shows how the industry organized itself in the city. You can see how the large open floor plan was designed specifically to handle the sorting, pressing, and storage of fleeces from across the region.

Practical

Inside, you can still see the heavy timber posts and steel ties that created large open spaces, helping visitors understand how work happened back then. The red brick structure is easy to spot from outside and gives a clear sense of the industrial craftsmanship from that era.

Did you know?

The sawtooth roof was not just decoration but a clever invention for work: it let in diffuse light that was ideal for sorting wool by color and quality. This design was a technical advance back then, specifically developed for the needs of the textile trade.
