CSR Refinery, New Farm

The CSR Refinery is an industrial complex along the Brisbane River that contains multiple factory buildings, workshops, and storage structures for raw sugar and syrup production. The site now forms part of the Cutters Landing residential development while preserving key heritage components.

Built in 1893, the refinery operated for more than 100 years before closing in 1998, making it a cornerstone of sugar production in Queensland. Its long operation shaped regional industrial development and contributed significantly to the area's economic growth.

The refinery served as a major source of employment for New Farm residents across multiple generations, creating lasting bonds between the facility and the local community. Family ties to work here remained strong, making it central to the neighborhood's identity and shared history.

The site is located at Lamington Street with river access and is now configured as a residential development. Visitors should check ahead about which areas are accessible, as parts may have restricted entry due to the ongoing residential use.

The refinery retains original architectural features designed by architect James Muir and stands as one of Australia's last surviving nineteenth-century sugar refineries. These rare structural remains offer insight into early industrial construction and design practices.
