Yungaba Immigration Centre, Immigration center at Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, Australia.
Yungaba Immigration Centre is a three-story building with a symmetrical cruciform layout and two towers positioned at the corners. The verandahs feature decorative cast iron balustrade panels that give the structure its distinctive appearance.
The facility opened in 1887 and served as a military hospital during World War I. After the war, it was converted to provide housing for returning servicemen.
The name Yungaba comes from the Gubbi Gubbi Aboriginal language and means place of sunshine. Visitors walking through the converted building today can still sense this connection to the land's original inhabitants.
The building is located at 102 Main Street in Kangaroo Point and was converted in 2019. The former immigration depot has been transformed into residential apartments and is not open to the public.
The building became the first structure protected under Queensland's Cultural Record Act in 1987. This milestone recognition marked a turning point in how the state approached architectural heritage preservation.
