The Petrie Bight Retaining Wall extends 150 meters along Queen Street, varying in height from 5 to 9 meters, constructed with Brisbane tuff stone blocks.
Built between 1881 and 1882 by Henry Patten, the wall supported municipal development by enhancing road and wharf facilities for the Brisbane Municipal Council.
The wall represents the engineering practices of late 19th century Brisbane, featuring decorative cast-iron railings crafted by local ironfounders Smith Forrester & Co.
Recent modifications include dismantled and reconstructed sections, with new openings providing access routes to modern facilities and buildings along Queen Street.
Eight engaged buttresses were added in 1887 to stabilize the structure after reports indicated the wall had developed a noticeable lean.
