Espie Dods House, Heritage site at Wickham Terrace, Spring Hill, Australia
Espie Dods House is a two-story brick building in Spring Hill with black and white marble floors, wooden wall panels, and timber ceilings. Four fireplaces are placed throughout to serve both the living quarters and the former doctor's consulting room below.
Robin Dods designed this residence in 1906 for his brother Dr Espie Dods as both a home and medical practice on Wickham Terrace. The building came about when doctors commonly operated their practices from their own homes.
The house shows Scottish architectural elements and Arts and Crafts movement influences that shaped Queensland design in the early 1900s. These styles blend together in the building's details and structure in ways visitors can see throughout.
The building is arranged in two distinct levels with living spaces above and kitchen and dining areas below. Visitors should be prepared for the uneven floors and features typical of older structures.
The building features an oval window in its small porch and a roughcast exterior finish that set it apart from other medical residences of its era. These design choices remain visible details that visitors can spot when looking closely.
