Shrine of Remembrance, Brisbane, War memorial in Brisbane, Australia.
The Shrine of Remembrance is a circular sandstone building with 18 Doric columns rising from granite steps at ANZAC Square. An eternal flame burns at the top while galleries below contain military artifacts and commemorative displays.
The memorial was dedicated in 1930 on Armistice Day and was built to honor Australian and New Zealand soldiers from World War I. Its design reflects the importance placed on remembering this pivotal period in national history.
The memorial displays names of soldiers and features artworks that honor international war cemeteries. You can sense the connection between Australia and those who served across generations.
The memorial is open to visitors daily and easily reached on foot from the city center. Early mornings or late afternoons offer quieter times to walk around and reflect.
The 18 columns were deliberately chosen to reference the year 1918, marking World War I's end. Battle names are engraved around the upper edge of the structure.
