Manor Apartment Hotel, Heritage-listed hotel in Brisbane CBD, Australia
The Manor Apartment Hotel is a ten-story building on Queen Street featuring three sets of paired windows and decorative gargoyles along its front. Inside are 46 apartments ranging from studios to two-bedroom units, each equipped with kitchen facilities and private laundry.
Built between 1930 and 1931 for the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society, the structure replaced an earlier 1883 building as the company needed more space to grow. This new construction reflected the company's expanding business during that period.
The building uses Benedict stone, a local material made from cement and crushed Brisbane tuff, which connects it to the early Catholic industrial presence in the city. This choice of materials reflects how construction practices were tied to local religious and business networks.
Access to the building requires some thought due to its narrow street frontage and the special arrangements made for traffic flow. Visitors should allow time to locate entrances and understand the layout of this tightly configured space.
The street frontage is only about 33 feet (10 meters) wide, requiring special approval from authorities to create a proper right-of-way for traffic. This tight constraint shaped how the building sits and functions on the busy Queen Street today.
