Old St Stephens Church, Gothic Revival church in Brisbane, Australia
The sandstone building features a rectangular nave, square chancel, and lancet windows constructed according to English small church designs from 1850.
The church opened on May 12, 1850, and served as Brisbane's cathedral in 1859 until a larger building became necessary for the growing Catholic population.
The structure represents early Catholic presence in Brisbane, where the faith community made up 30 percent of residents in 1846.
Located at 249 Elizabeth Street in Brisbane, the church underwent restoration and now functions as St Stephen's Chapel for religious activities.
The building stands as Brisbane's oldest remaining church, displaying construction methods from the 1840s and original architectural elements by Augustus Pugin.
