St. Andrew's Uniting Church, Brisbane, Heritage church building in Brisbane CBD, Australia.
St. Andrew's Uniting Church is a church building in Brisbane's central business district that features a cruciform floor plan with transepts and semi-circular arched openings. The nave is concluded by a semi-domed chancel equipped with stained glass windows.
The building was completed in 1905 according to architect George David Payne's winning design and was constructed by Alexander Lind & Son. It marked the third location for the city's Presbyterian congregation.
The church displays ornamental stained glass windows that direct light into the interior and create a reflective mood. Visitors can admire the craftsmanship of these details and sense how the space is shaped by these artistic elements.
The building is located on Creek Street in the business district and is easily reached by public transportation. Visitors should note that the church is an active place of worship and is best visited outside of service times.
The building departs from the typical Gothic architecture of other churches and instead uses heavy geometric forms made from brick and concrete in a Neo-Romanesque style. This constructive approach gives the structure a powerful, solid appearance that stands out distinctly in the downtown area.
