Church House, Brisbane, Anglican Diocesan offices in Brisbane, Australia
Church House sits on Ann Street with a steep gable roof, stone and brick walls, and narrow pointed-arch windows characteristic of its period. The structure includes wrought iron railings and reinforced concrete balconies that were added during later modifications.
The Church of England purchased the Ann Street property in 1899 and construction of the office building began several years later. The structure was completed in 1909, expanding the Anglican Diocese's administrative presence in Brisbane.
The building displays Gothic design mixed with Arts and Crafts movement ideas, reflecting how early 20th century religious leaders wanted their administrative spaces to look. You can see this blend in the decorative details and the way the structure commands attention on Ann Street.
The building currently serves as the administrative center for the Anglican Diocese, housing the Diocesan Archives and the Social Welfare department. Access may be limited since it functions as an active office building, so checking ahead is advisable.
The building preserves most of its original architectural features while later concrete balconies show how the structure adapted to changing needs over time. This layering of different construction periods reveals the evolution of how the space was used.
