Bertholme, Heritage residence in New Farm, Brisbane, Australia.
Bertholme is a single-story sandstone house at 71-73 Moray Street in Brisbane with characteristic hipped roofs and bay windows. The front verandah is decorated with ornamental cast-iron work, while the interior has kept its original square layout despite various modifications over the decades.
Architect Andrea Stombuco designed and built the house between 1882 and 1883 for Henry Cohen, manager of the Elliot Brothers pharmaceutical company. The building was named after Cohen's wife Bertha and would later become an important gathering place for women's organizations.
The Moreton Club, a private women's organization, has used the house as a gathering place for social events since 1958. The rooms show how members come together here for fellowship and shared activities.
The house is located in the New Farm area and is easily accessible on foot with good visibility from the street. Visitors should note that this is a private building and access may be limited.
The building operated as a nursing home from 1939 to 1958 under the care of Jane Ingram before being taken over by the women's organization. This period of medical use is often overlooked today, even though it forms a significant part of the building's past.
