Amity, New Farm, Heritage residence in New Farm, Australia.
Amity is a timber residence built in 1892, situated on Welsby Street near Bulimba Reach in New Farm. The house features verandahs on three sides and retains original elements such as vertically boarded walls, ornate ceiling roses, and cast iron railings.
Built in 1892 for businessman Thomas Welsby, the house represents the last timber riverfront residence in New Farm before industrial development transformed the area. Its survival marks an important transition point as this formerly affluent neighborhood shifted toward commercial and industrial use.
The entrance door features decorative glass panels bearing Welsby's initials and the name Amity, examples of fine craftsmanship from the late 1800s. Such personalized touches were common ways homeowners of means expressed their identity in their residences.
The property features terraced grounds with pathways leading toward the river and is accessible from the street. As a protected heritage site, visitors should move carefully around the building and respect any display or access instructions.
Later additions to the property included a car accommodation area, a practical but visually distinct element from the original design. This adaptation demonstrates how heritage houses had to adjust to modern needs while retaining their period features.
