Old Carbrook State School, Heritage-listed state school in Carbrook, Australia
Old Carbrook State School is a heritage-listed state school building on Beenleigh-Redland Bay Road featuring wooden walls, a shingled roof, and a front verandah added in 1889. The structure exemplifies late-19th-century construction methods and remains the sole surviving example of early school architecture in the settlement.
German settlers founded Gramzow Provisional School in 1877 with 23 students, and it was renamed Carbrook during World War I in 1916. The school operated at this location for over a century before relocating in 1987 and the building gained heritage status.
The school served as a gathering place for the German-speaking community beyond just lessons. Families would meet here, making it a center of local social life and connection.
The building has been maintained by Logan City Council for community services since 1995 and remains accessible for viewing. Its location on Beenleigh-Redland Bay Road makes it easy to find and offers visitors a clear sense of the settlement's early school architecture.
The building incorporated a postal receiving slot in its front wall, serving as a mail drop for the remote settlement. This practical solution shows how the school doubled as a communications hub for the scattered community.
