Beenleigh Rum Distillery

The Beenleigh Rum Distillery is a production facility in Eagleby situated along the Albert River, equipped with copper pot stills, barrel storage areas, and working spaces for producing spirits. The site demonstrates all stages of the distillation and aging process in one location near the water.

The facility was founded in 1884 after acquiring a copper still from a wrecked steamship called the SS Walrus that washed ashore at the site. This salvaged equipment became the essential tool that launched and sustained the operation.

The facility holds Australia's first official license and demonstrates traditional rum-making methods that date back to the 19th century. Visitors witness these historic techniques still in use during production, connecting directly to the craft as it has been practiced for generations.

Guided tours show visitors the working areas, while tasting sessions allow sampling of various rum styles produced on-site. Planning time for both the tour and the tastings ensures you experience the full range of what the facility offers.

The facility produces spirits using rainwater collected in a local dam and molasses from nearby sugar mills, the same sources used since its foundation. This reliance on consistent local ingredients has allowed the production process to remain virtually unchanged for over a century.
