Arrilalah, Ghost settlement in Western Queensland, Australia
Arrilalah is a ghost settlement in Western Queensland that remains as scattered physical traces. It contains a small cemetery with graves, a record board documenting the community from 1883 to 1919, and the ruins of a chemist building from 1884.
The settlement started in the 1860s as Forest Grove and was renamed in 1885. It declined when the railway route shifted to nearby Longreach, ending its prospects as a major hub.
The cemetery holds the names of early settlers and reveals the movements people made across this region. The graves and old records provide insight into the lives of those who tried to build a community here.
The site lies south of Longreach, accessible by following Tocal Road and then turning onto Jundah Road. Most of the route is sealed, making it reachable by standard car, though the area is remote.
The chemist building from 1884 stands as the only surviving structure from when locals expected the railway to pass through here. It is a physical reminder of the hopes that once rested on this small place.
