Atherton is a town in Queensland's Tablelands Region, situated west of Cairns on the Atherton Tableland. The area encompasses several settlements including Tolga, Kairi, and Walkamin, linked by the Kennedy Highway and surrounded by rich agricultural land.
The area was established as the Tinaroo Division in 1881 and later became the Shire of Atherton in 1935. It merged into the Tablelands Regional Authority during administrative reforms in 2008.
