Malanda Falls Swimming Pool, Heritage swimming pool at Malanda Falls, Queensland.
Malanda Falls Swimming Pool is an outdoor bathing facility at the base of a four-meter basalt waterfall on the North Johnstone River, surrounded by tropical rainforest vegetation. The site includes swimming areas, paved pathways, lawn spaces, and various amenities designed for recreational use.
Development began in 1918 when the local community removed submerged logs and installed a wooden diving platform in response. In 1925, residents founded Malanda's first swimming club, transforming the site into an important community gathering place.
The name derives from local Indigenous language, and it functions as a social hub where residents gather for swimming and picnicking throughout the year. The manicured grounds and terraced spaces support community recreation, particularly during warmer seasons when families visit regularly.
The site is easily accessible on foot, with well-maintained paths running through the grounds that suit various mobility levels. Picnic areas with tables and barbecue facilities are available, allowing visitors to spend extended time on the grounds.
Military presence during World War II led to significant infrastructure improvements on the grounds, particularly to the diving tower structure. These changes left lasting marks on the physical layout that visitors can still observe today.
