Jumbun is an Indigenous community located on approximately 240 hectares near Murray Upper, situated within North Queensland tropical rainforest at an equal distance between Cairns and Townsville. The settlement is governed by an elected board and coordinates partnerships with corporate, government, and community organizations.
Established in 1978, this settlement emerged from Girrimay language roots, with its name derived from the Witchetty Grub inhabiting candle nut trees in the region. The naming reflects the deep connection between Indigenous peoples and the natural world around them.
Residents practice traditional basket weaving using cane and fibers, creating distinctive vessels called burrajingal, gundala, and mindi that serve everyday and ceremonial needs. These skills connect people to ancestral knowledge and remain central to community life.
Visitors should arrange visits in advance as this is private community land that is not freely accessible to the public. It is essential to respect local protocols and guidelines when spending time in the settlement.
The settlement is home to roughly 90 Indigenous people primarily from Girrimay and Dyirbal backgrounds who maintain their bond to ancestral lands through sustainable practices. This small population size allows the community to preserve traditional knowledge in a close-knit way.
