Palace Hotel, Childers, Heritage-listed hotel in Childers, Australia.
The Palace Hotel is a two-story masonry building with corrugated iron roofs and a rectangular wing connected through an internal courtyard. The ground floor now functions as a tourist information center operated by Bundaberg Regional Council, while the upper level houses memorial spaces.
The hotel was built in 1902 following a fire that destroyed several buildings on Churchill Street. The new masonry structure replaced an earlier wooden hotel that stood at the same location.
The building displays a memorial glass wall created by artist Sam Di Mauro that honors those who died in the 2000 fire. Visitors can encounter this quiet tribute while exploring the upper floors of the hotel.
The ground floor is accessible to the public as an information center where visitors can learn about the local area. The upper floors are open for visitors to explore the memorial spaces and see the building's layout.
A painting by artist Josonia Palaitis depicts all victims of the 2000 fire based on their photographs. This artwork serves as a moving remembrance of those who lost their lives in that tragedy.
