Brennan & Geraghtys Store

Brennan & Geraghtys Store on Lennox Street is a retail museum holding over 100,000 historical items, original fixtures, and business records from 1871 onwards. The museum complex includes the main store building, two adjacent houses, and former stables.

Patrick Brennan and Martin Geraghty founded their store in 1864 and ran it under family management until 1972. The business operated continuously for over a century as a working shop before becoming a museum.

The store displays the interior layout of a 19th-century Australian grocery shop, showing how people from earlier generations went about their shopping. The arrangement of shelves and product displays reflects the retail practices of that time.

The National Trust manages this museum complex with several buildings to explore and different areas showcasing various aspects of the business. Allow enough time to wander through the rooms and examine the collections at a comfortable pace.

The store preserves numerous discontinued products from the late Victorian era through the interwar years in their original packaging. These items offer a direct window into the consumer habits and branded goods that people actually bought during those periods.
