Maryborough Post Office, Colonial post office in Maryborough, Australia

Maryborough Post Office is a two-story stone building with a corner tower and broad palazzo design located at 227 Bazaar Street. It features layered arch windows, loggias, and square columns supporting the structure, creating a distinctive appearance that marks an important civic landmark.

The building was constructed between 1865 and 1866, making it Queensland's oldest surviving post office. Its creation followed the state's separation from New South Wales, when independent government infrastructure was being established.

The building shows how colonial architects designed important public spaces in Queensland, using layered arch windows and columns that still define the streetscape today. These design choices made the structure a landmark where the community gathered and recognized the town's growing importance.

The building sits centrally on Bazaar Street and is easy to reach on foot. The open facade allows good views of the architectural details from street level.

The original plans for this building were exchanged with those of Rockhampton's post office to reduce costs, resulting in specific roof orientation adaptations that remain visible today. This practical decision during the construction period reflects how budgets shaped architectural details across Queensland towns.
